Seven Tips for Asbestos Removal Process

By Molly Owen In Asbestos

Asbestos removal is a necessary procedure for protecting you and your family against possible asbestos related diseases. Asbestos is natural fibrous material, which was widely used in building materials. Some parts of your home that could contain asbestos contaminated materials are roofing, tiles, shingles, insulation materials, steam pipes, gaskets, wallpapers and calking compounds. This list is not exhaustive and you should contact your local health and environment office or professional asbestos removal and abatement company to assess the extent and status of asbestos materials in your house.

Why Asbestos Removal

All buildings constructed before 1970s had widespread use of asbestos contaminated building materials. However, after the information and awareness about the health hazards of this deadly contaminant, people have stopped using asbestos in building materials. Inhalation of asbestos particles could lead to serious lung disease including lung cancers and mesothelioma cancers. Moreover, there is no safe level of asbestos exposure and inhalation of even a minute particle could pose a serious health risk. This is the reason why more and more people are opting for asbestos removal services for their homes.

Asbestos abatement and removal is a mandatory requirement for schools and commercial buildings. Even if there are no mandatory obligations of asbestos removal for private residential buildings, it is safe to get an asbestos survey and opt for asbestos removal from your house.

Here are some important tips that you must follow while undertaking an asbestos removal service.

  1. Hire a professional asbestos removal service for removing asbestos materials.
  2. Check that the asbestos removal company has necessary experience, expertise, equipment and accreditation for conducting asbestos survey, abatement and removal.
  3. Asbestos removal should be the last resort and should be done only if the asbestos material is showing signs of wear and tear and could pose risks in the near future.
  4. If the material is intact and asbestos removal and abatement contractor is confident that it does not pose any health risks, it is better to leave it alone.
  5. You can opt for sealing of asbestos materials with sealants or encasing them in airtight structures as alternatives for asbestos removal.
  6. If you opt for asbestos removal, please ensure that removal process is done under proper supervision in accordance with safety norms and procedures.
  7. Ensure safe disposal of all removed material and proper cleaning of all parts of the house and affected materials.
